The talks in this panel all bring together a twofold perspective: On the one hand, a wide set of film theoretical approaches has pointed towards the importance of embodied perception – and dimensions of affect, feeling, mood or atmosphere that go along with embodied experiences – in regard to audio-visual images. Lately, these – largely film philosophical and phenomenological approaches – have resonated in models on embodied cognition and film viewing. With regard to the applied analysis of audio-visual images and the ‘discourses‘ these images convey, these theories pose a challenge. As a consequence, the analysis of audio-visual discourses cannot stick to looking at individual representations against this backdrop. On the other hand, the aesthetic dimensions that can be modeled as providing the affective grounds of audio-visual perception and meaning making have not been the subject matter of systematical studies so far. All talks within this panel aim at addressing this challenge.

On the other hand, these theories of embodied experience paradoxically gain influence in an academic environment, that – in its vanishing point – replaces perceiving human bodies more and more with machines, using complex algorithms to analyze audio-visual images: the so-called digital film studies. With regard to different aspects – digital analysis, audio-visual poetics influenced by a digital media environment or the epistemological potential of digital image montage – all the talks within this panel aim at addressing this paradox of embodied meaning making in a more and more disembodied environment. In bringing these two perspectives together, they try to raise and address questions regarding the contemporary state of scientific film analysis.
